About the Program

Central Maine Power Company started the Maine Power Reliability Program (MPRP) in 2006 to study the strength of Maine's bulk power transmission system and to later implement the upgrades needed to improve the electric system's reliability and meet federal reliability standards.

After nearly four years of intensive studies, planning and permitting, CMP and its contractors began construction of the MPRP on August 12, 2010 in Benton, Maine.

The MPRP is a five-year project that will strengthen and expand Maine's electric grid through upgrades to the existing system and the construction of new high-voltage transmission lines and substations from Eliot to Orrington.

At an estimated cost of $1.4 billion, this is the largest construction project ever performed in the State of Maine. Due to its massive scope, the project is expected to bring numerous economic benefits to the state including:
