In Lewiston, the project will involve the construction of a new 345-115 kV substation, 115 kV and 345 kV transmission lines, and the rebuilding of 34.5 kV and 115 kV transmission lines.

New Transmission Lines

From the Greene-Lewiston municipal boundary running southward to the new  Larrabee Road Substation, approximately 1.4 miles of a new 115 kV transmission line will be constructed on the east side of the existing corridor. The new line will be constructed on single pole structures averaging 75 feet in height. Additionally in this corridor, a portion of the existing 115 kV transmission line will be relocated and rebuilt on H-frame structures averaging 75 feet in height and the existing structures will be removed.

From the Greene-Lewiston municipal boundary running westward to the Larrabee Road substation, approximately 1.8 miles of a new 345 kV transmission line will be constructed on H-frame structures averaging 75 feet in height.

From the Durham-Auburn municipal boundary running northward to the Larrabee Road Substation, approximately 9.5 miles of a new 345 kV transmission line will be constructed on the west side of the existing lines on H-frame and single-pole structures averaging 75 feet in height.

Rebuilt Transmission Lines

From the Greene-Lewiston municipal boundary running westward to the Gulf Island Substation, an existing 34.5 kV transmission line (Section 41) will be removed. Another existing 34.5 kV transmission line (Section 72) will be relocated and rebuilt on single-pole structures averaging 35 feet in height around the Larrabee Road Substation. The existing 115 kV transmission line (Section 212) will be relocated and rebuilt on single-pole structures averaging 75 feet in height and the existing H-frame structures will be removed from the municipal boundary to the Larrabee Road Substation.

From the Durham-Auburn municipal boundary running northward to the Larrabee Road Substation, approximately one mile of the existing 115 kV transmission line (Section 64) will be relocated and rebuilt on single-pole structures averaging 75 feet in height to the east of its current location within the existing corridor.

Larrabee Road Substation

The new substation will be located on a 70-acre parcel at the end of Larrabee Road approximately 1,100 feet east of its junction with Main Street (U.S. Route 202). Approximately 16.16 acres will remain permanently developed after the project’s completion. The substation yard will include construction of a control house to be located near the center of the yard, including sanitation facilities and a 1,500 gallon holding tank located adjacent to the building, and a drilled well for a potable water supply.

The purpose of the substation will be to step down voltage from 345 kV to 115 kV and to provide switching capacity, a common process that involves the transfer or discontinuance of electrical load. A total of eight 115 kV terminations and two 345 kV terminations will interconnect at the substation. System reliability will be greatly improved by this added infrastructure and the current system risks of extensive area outages will be greatly diminished by the added electrical supply.
