Benefits to Maine

The Day Brook parcel is a 54-acre property located in an area of southern Maine well known for diverse and significant habitats that support rare plant and animal species. The Maine Natural Area Program classified this area as "rare and unusual natural community”. The site is comprised of forests with various cover types, open meadows, scrub-shrub areas, 12 acres of wetlands, two significant vernal pools, 100 linear feet of stream restoration, 2,259 linear feet of stream length and a nesting pair of upland sandpipers.
This property is adjacent to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife’s conservation area, Kennebunk Plains Wildlife Management Area and The Nature Conservancy’s Kennebunk Plains Reserve. The proximity to the Kennebunk Plains, Wells Barren property, the Mousam River Division of the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge and the Massabesic Experimental Forest enhances the value of the Day Brook property and will add to the existing network of protected land in the area.
Included in this compensation parcel transfer is restoration of critical terrestrial habitat for two significant vernal pools and restoration of riparian corridor degraded by a timber harvesting stream crossing. Restoration of the riparian buffer consists of planting wetland shrubs across the former logging road to stabilize stream banks and reduce erosion and siltation into Day Brook. Woody debris will also be removed from the channel to restore fish passage upstream of the crossing.
This parcel was transferred to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife in March 2011.
