Benefits to Maine

The Long Cove Brook property consists of 456 acres that are primarily forested and include 88 acres of wetlands, active and inactive beaver flowages, open water areas, scrub-shrub, emergent wetlands, six significant vernal pools, 1.2 linear miles of streams, deer wintering areas (DWA) and critical habitat.
Old rock walls, roads and trails reverting to forest, a well indicate that a portion of this property has been used for farming and perhaps as a homestead in the past. This site is at risk for residential development because of a large amount of developable uplands and frontage on a town road. This property currently supports multiple wildlife-related recreational uses and an observed uses includes hunting, camping, hiking, fishing and snowmobiling.
Existing and proposed protected open spaces in the vicinity include Moose Point State Park, Hurd Pond Wildlife Management Area, Fort Point State Park, Sears Island, MPRP Half Moon Stream Property and MPRP Main Stream Property. In the context of local and regional conservation planning, the Long Cove Brook property is a valuable addition to the proposed and existing conserved and public lands.
The entire property will be protected from development by a conservation easement and provide substantial contiguous wildlife and vernal pool habitat, water quality benefits and recreational opportunities. The property was transferred to the Coastal Mountains Land Trust in December 2010 with a $25,000 stewardship grant to provide access, parking and the development of a trail network.
