Benefits to Maine

The Montsweag Brook property includes 27 acres that encompasses the Brook and a dam near the southern end of the site that was constructed in 1941 to form a pond and back-up water source for nearby Mason Station.
Several protected open space and recreational properties are in the vicinity of the Montsweag Brook property, including Chewonki Foundation’s Back River Trail, the Wiscasset’s Sortwell Memorial Forest, Earl E. Kelley Wildlife Management Area, Steve Kelley Wildlife Management Area and Green Point Wildlife Management Area. In addition, when Chewonki acquired title to the lower dam through the Maine Yankee decommissioning settlement, it was also granted an easement to a 60 foot wide strip of land that extends from the lower dam to the upper dam.
The property will be protected by a conservation easement with financial assistance for the purpose of evaluating and facilitating removal of the upper dam and restoration of fish passage to the upper reaches of the Montsweag Brook. The recipient has not yet been chosen.
