Benefits to Maine

The Runaround Brook site is a stream restoration project that will enhance 1,700 linear feet of this intermittent to perennial tributary of the Chandler River.
The Brook flows through culverts under adjacent roads, around the back of the Surowiec Substation, and eventually back to Runaround Pond. Deep and wide channels with unnaturally sharp corners have been created as the Brook approaches the road crossings and flows around the substation. A portion of the Brook is relegated to a road side drainage ditch. Typical stream habitat features and riparian buffers are insufficient. Along segments of Runaround Brook, a berm prevents flood waters from overflowing into the adjacent FEMA designated floodplain and associated wetlands.
Beaver have been an ongoing problem with operations of the substation and were removed in early 2009. In coordination with representatives from MDEP, DIFW and the Army Corp, the beaver dam that caused the unsafe conditions at the substation was removed from a portion of the Brook channel.
