On August 4, two crew members working for L.E.Myers, a company contracted to construct transmission lines on Central Maine Power's Maine Power Reliability Program, were faced with a true test of character while returning from a day on the job site. While traveling on Troy Road in Detroit they spotted smoke billowing from a nearby barn.
The two crew members, Anthony Iannello and Jared Haney, wasted no time as they rushed to alert the farmer, who then called the fire department. When the fire department arrived, they found that the men had used their own fire extinguishers to stifle the flames and prevent the fire from spreading. Their quick thinking and selfless actions helped save the barn.
In a relaxed manner, Iannello humbly recounted the story, "I’m glad we caught it when we did and that we were able to help save the barn." He added that he likes to help out when he can. And without hesitation and without a desire for recognition, Iannello said that he would do it again.
Despite Iannello and Haney's modesty about the act, CMP held a recognition ceremony to honor their actions, which was attended by local emergency responders, the L.E. Meyers team, and Doug Herling, CMP Vice President of Special Projects.
At the ceremony, Herling stated that, "saving the barn was a heroic act and without a doubt exceeded our expectations. Not only did they go beyond their duty, but they defined what it is to be a good neighbor, something that CMP and its contractors strive for every day."
To further thank Iannello and Haney for their actions, they each received $100 gift cards to Longhorn Steakhouse. Pictured below are Herling (right), Iannello (center) and Bill Green (left), project supervisor for L.E. Myers, after the ceremony. Unfortunately, Haney was unable to attend.
